Gregorio Luke Returns to Santa Ana

Posted in Arts & Culture, Downtown by Omar Ávalos Gallegos on September 26, 2011

Reputable lecturer on Mexican arts and culture Gregorio Luke returns to Santa Ana this Thursday to lecture on the history of Mariachi music. The event will be held at the sorely underused Birch Park on 3rd and Birch streets. It’s about time that this park is used for a Downtown event. There is potential here for many events. One has to wonder why it’s been so sorely underused for so long. Ehem, Ward 2 representative? Hello?

Luke, while not a proclaimed musicologist, has partaken in other presentations having to do with Mexican music. He was part of the Sondios de México festival in 2007 at Segerstrom Hall, as part of that year’s American Composers Festival.

Prior to that and while director at the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach, he collaborated with the Long Beach Symphony and their director Enrique Diemecke of Mexico by bringing them to the museum to perform Latin American art music by Mexican composer Manuel M. Ponce and Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos. That night the LBSO performed Ponce’s guitar concerto and the work Bachianas Brasileiras by Villa-Lobos.

Mariachi Imperial will perform in addition to the lecture. The event takes place from 7-10 pm on Thursday, September 29.
