6 Latinos to have streets named after them in NYC

If you live or work in New York City, don’t be surprised to come across “Yomo Toro Place,” “Juan Rodriguez Way” or “Joe Perez Way.” There will soon be a total of six Latino names, which were part of the 52 street namings ordered by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg this week.

According to a statement from the mayor’s office, the Latinos whose names were chosen by city council members were recognized for either their service to the city or country or for their lifetime accomplishments.

“The local community starts the process off,” says Maria del Carmen Arroyo, the city council member who submitted a legislative request to have acclaimed musician Yomo Toro considered for a street naming, which will take place on July 27. “[He] was an individual who came from the community and was…
