Santa Ana Gets a New Soccer Field

A new soccer field will be placed at the corner of 17th Street and College Avenue, as part of the construction taking place at Santa Ana College. College Avenue is permanently closed to through traffic from 15th Street to Martha Lane as of February 20. There will be no further access to the campus from Martha Lane or 15th Street as these will become cul de sacs. 

Other improvements include the addition of spectator seats on the west side of the track field, expansion to the parking lot on the southwest corner of the campus, and more.

Introducing Saint City Soccer

Saint City Soccer is a new blog and category here at the Santa Ana Sentinel. After all, this is a soccer town. And, it turns out that there a bunch of Galaxy fans here. They have an officially recognized Galaxy pub over at The Olde Ship.

There’s much to say and discuss, whether it’s about the Santa Ana Winds’ upcoming season in the National Premier Soccer League, or the Santa Ana College Dons and their next playoff run, or why the divide between Chivas USA and Galaxy supporters. Truly, the LA “Super Clásico” or “Clásico angelino” rivalry spills into Santa Ana.

José Vásquez of the Dons Named Winds FC Head Coach

Leonel López, a writer for the Santa Ana Winds Football (soccer) Club reports that Santa Ana College soccer coach José Vásquez will coach the Winds for their 2012 season in the National Premier Soccer League.

The NPSL is experiencing growth nationwide for a consecutive year. The Winds will be joined by the newcoming Fullerton Rangers club that is known for their youth academy.

Vásquez led the SAC Dons to eighteen consecutive Orange Empire Conference league titles as an assistant and head coach. SAC is one of the most reputable teams in the state and nation and enters the playoffs against Rio Hondo College on Saturday, November 19 in an away match.

SAC Dons: Orange Empire Conference Champions

The Dons of Santa Ana College won their eighteenth consecutive Orange Empire Conference Championship in men’s soccer with a 1-0 win over Irvine Valley College on November 8. SAC improves to 13-4-3 overall and 10-2-1 in the Orange Empire Conference.

SAC kicked off the month of November with a heavy 5-1 loss on November 1 to Orange Coast but then trounced Santiago Canyon 5-0 three days later. The Dons close the season against Golden West on Nov. 11.

SAC Dons Update

The Santa Ana College Dons men’s soccer team is on a seven-game win streak. Their latest win was a trouncing of Riverside with a score of 5-0 on October 28. The Dons began their Orange Empire Conference match ups on September 27 and have gone 8-1-1 (Won Tied Lost) since then. SAC ends the season with four more conference matches with Orange Coast, Santiago Canyon, Irvine Valley and Golden West. They are currently 8-1-1 against their conference and 11-3-3 overall.

In this season’s previous meetings with these four, SAC shut out the competition with scores of 2-0 (OCC), 5-0 (SCC), 2-0 (IVC) and 2-0 (GWC).

The Dons Host College of the Canyons Today at 3pm in Men’s Soccer

The Dons of Santa Ana College receive the Cougars of the College of the Canyons from Santa Clarita, CA today at 3pm.

The Dons are currently 2-1-1 (W-L-D) in Men’s Soccer while Canyons is 1-0-2.

The Dons will look to take some revenge on Canyons, the team that ended the Dons’ season in 2010.

SAC goes on a three-game road trip starting with regional powerhouse Mt. San Antonio on Sep. 21 followed by Palomar and Fullerton until the next home game at SAC on Sep. 30 against Cypress in an Orange Empire Conference match.

Update: Canyons tied SAC in stoppage time. Final score: 1-1.
